Wiltshire CIL provides training opportunities to people in Wiltshire who receive a Direct Payment and those who self fund their own social care. Training is provided directly by Wiltshire CIL trainers or by contracting reputable trainers depending on the course.
The courses cover a wide range of topics – from management and finance to Support Planning and DET (Disability Equality Training) – and are delivered by experienced and knowledgeable trainers. Individual bespoke training is provided on request.
These workshops are organised at different locations across Wiltshire to assist those new to direct payments to learn how they work and meet those with experience of setting them up previously. They are facilitated in an informal discussion manner and an: Independent Living Resource Advisor, Peer Group Co-ordinator and Peer Mentor feed into each one. There are currently three workshops running regularly within Wiltshire on the following themes:
- Introducing Direct Payments
This introduces participants to all aspects of direct payments - the choices it gives you in arranging care support and your responsibilities in budgeting the direct payment.
- Recruiting and Managing Staff
This introduces participants to good practice when employing staff, through a direct payment, and the various ways to recruit them. Including advertising and using the South West Personal Assistant Register (SW-PA Register). This workshop is also suitable for self funders looking to employ staff to meet their needs.
- Being Assertive with Direct Payments
We know how hard it is, at times, to speak up for ourselves and be assertive in difficult situations. This workshop looks at skills we can develop to use during the assessment process, when negotiating with an agency and when managing staff. This workshop aims to give direct payment users more confidence in getting what they need out of their direct payment.

Training topics cover a variety of issues from basic book keeping to producing budgets and cash flow forecasts. Training is provided in small groups or provided on a one-to-one basis.
Wiltshire CIL works in partnership with other User Led Organisations in order to provide a wide spread of training and professional development and to increase the capacity and skills of people using Self Directed Support
The training offered by Wilts CIL will provide a series of courses to develop the skills and knowledge of service users across Wiltshire to enable them to fully participate and represent their needs in all future work and developments affecting them. The courses range from Assertiveness and Confidence Building to training in Management and supervising staff.
